Tamaiti Whangai is
"the practice of supporting and nurturing children - remembering we
are all children
responsible to, and
for, each other".
Literally translated Tamaiti Whangai
means "nurturing children".
The Tamaiti Whangai
project was
conceived and developed by Dr Kara Puketapu, C.E.O. of te Runanganui o
Taranaki Whanui who wanted to
address the issue of poor education achievement among Maori
children when compared
to other ethnic groups in New Zealand, and also to lower the Maori youth
crime rate.
Traditional efforts to
improve these rates are not producing results quickly enough, and so
Tamaiti Whangai, as a
whanau/extended family-based project uses the strengths of its
direct networks to attack these problems.
